Ex-Senator Na’Allah: Many Lawmakers Can’t Afford School Fees After Office

Former Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah has revealed that many Nigerian lawmakers struggle financially after leaving office, often unable to pay their children's school fees due to poor financial planning.

Speaking on Trust TV’s 30 Minutes, the ex-lawmaker from Kebbi South debunked the widespread belief that public office guarantees wealth.

“Go and find any senator or House member who had no prior business before entering politics and can afford their children’s school fees a year after leaving office,” he said.

Na’Allah explained that the luxurious image of life in the National Assembly is often misleading. “Some joined thinking it’s a money-making venture, only to leave poorer,” he added.

When pressed on why many lawmakers appear affluent, he replied, “That’s your perception. Do the research, and you’ll see the truth.”

He clarified he wasn’t defending legislators but offering insight based on experience, stating the public’s perception doesn’t reflect the reality inside the Assembly.

Na’Allah also addressed why lawmakers seek re-election, attributing it to ambition for higher roles like Senate President, not just the desire to remain in office.

He lost his Senate seat in the 2023 elections to Garba Maidoki, who polled 75,232 votes to his 70,785.
