Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has called for a generational shift in Nigerian politics, saying the country urgently needs fresh leaders to tackle its challenges.

Speaking on Channels Television on Friday, Datti reflected on his long political journey alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, noting their repeated contests over the years.

“When I was doing my NYSC, Baba Atiku was already running for president. In 2018 we contested primaries together, and again in the 2023 election,” he said. “And now, for 2027, must it be the same story?”

He stressed that Nigeria has many capable leaders ready to serve but blocked by the political system. “There is a whole new generation waiting for credible leadership to take the country forward,” Datti said.

He criticised the political system as expensive, difficult, and dominated by powerful godfathers, adding that competent Nigerians are discouraged by corruption and empty promises.

Datti also clarified that he had not declared his own presidential ambition, dismissing recent reports as inaccurate, and urged the nation to support leaders who can drive meaningful change.
