ADC establishes envoys in 12 countries to spotlight Nigeria’s democracy

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has launched a new international outreach initiative with the creation of a Special Representatives Network in key global capitals to strengthen its engagement with foreign governments, democratic institutions and the Nigerian diaspora.

The opposition party said the initiative is aimed at building structured communication channels with international stakeholders on developments in Nigeria’s political environment, particularly issues relating to democratic governance, human rights and electoral integrity.

In a statement released in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party explained that the network would consist of credible representatives serving as official envoys in strategically selected cities across North America, Europe and Africa.

According to the statement, the representatives will act as liaison officers between the ADC and international actors including foreign governments, parliamentary committees, democracy-support organisations, global media outlets and diaspora groups.

“These representatives will provide regular briefings on political developments in Nigeria, including matters concerning democratic governance, electoral processes, human rights concerns and alleged constraints on opposition political activities,” the statement said.

The ADC said the decision to establish the network followed what it described as a worrying pattern of developments since July 2025 that have affected opposition politics and democratic participation in the country.

The party alleged that such developments include attempts to destabilise opposition platforms, interfere with legitimate leadership structures within parties and limit the ability of opposition actors to organise politically.

It added that the creation of a structured international engagement framework would help ensure that global democratic institutions receive credible and balanced information about political developments in Nigeria.

According to the party, the move will also allow it to present its policy positions and reform proposals directly to international stakeholders interested in Nigeria’s democratic progress.

“The initiative is intended to ensure that global partners and democratic institutions have access to credible and balanced information about Nigeria’s political environment rather than relying solely on official government narratives,” the statement added.

The party identified twelve cities across major global political and diplomatic hubs for the deployment of its representatives.

The selected locations include Washington, DC; London; Brussels; Berlin; Ottawa; Paris; Pretoria; Addis Ababa; Nairobi; Accra; Geneva; and New York.

ADC said the representatives in these cities will engage policymakers, diplomatic institutions and diaspora communities while promoting dialogue on Nigeria’s democratic development.

The party noted that the presence of large Nigerian diaspora populations in many of these cities also makes them strategic locations for strengthening international awareness of Nigeria’s political situation.

Beyond the diplomatic outreach programme, the ADC also announced plans to establish a National Documentation Initiative designed to systematically gather information on incidents affecting political participation across the country.

Under the initiative, party structures at the state level will collect reports on issues such as threats against political actors, harassment, violent attacks, arbitrary arrests and disruptions of political activities.

The party said the data collected will be compiled into comprehensive reports that could be shared with both domestic and international stakeholders concerned about democratic governance in Nigeria.

ADC explained that the documentation initiative would serve as a mechanism for promoting transparency and ensuring that incidents affecting political rights are properly recorded.

According to the party, the combined initiatives represent a deliberate effort to strengthen its institutional capacity and reinforce its commitment to democratic norms and constitutional governance.

“The establishment of the Special Representatives Network marks an important step in strengthening the party’s international presence and improving the flow of credible information about political developments in Nigeria,” the statement said.

The party maintained that by formalising engagement with international partners and democratic institutions, it hopes to contribute to broader efforts aimed at promoting political accountability, safeguarding opposition rights and advancing democratic standards in Nigeria.
