President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, acknowledging the monarch’s pivotal role in his victory during the 2023 presidential election and his unwavering support for the Yoruba cause.
Speaking at the 8th Day Fidau Prayer held in honour of the revered monarch at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu-Ode, President Tinubu described the Awujale as a man of truth, courage, and integrity whose contributions to the Yoruba race will remain indelible.
“The Awujale was always there for us. He stood firmly with us during the struggle for the revalidation of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. He was steadfast, honest, and courageous. He would never deceive you,” Tinubu said.
He praised the late monarch for his dedication to justice and fairness, adding that Oba Adetona brought immense dignity and honour to Yorubaland. “Yoruba history would be incomplete without the Awujale’s contributions,” the President noted.
Tinubu also expressed gratitude to God for the monarch’s long and impactful life, having lived to the age of 91, and commended Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for his support to the late Oba. He urged the people of Ijebuland to preserve the legacies of unity and service left behind by the Awujale.
Abiodun hails Awujale’s moral leadership
Governor Abiodun, in his remarks, described Oba Adetona as a moral compass and visionary leader whose reign transformed Ijebuland.
“The Awujale upheld the dignity and culture of Ijebuland. He was a voice for the less privileged and a mentor to many. His life and leadership brought unprecedented development to Ijebuland,” Abiodun said.
He added that the monarch’s unshaken faith and ability to foster religious harmony among his people were hallmarks of his reign. “He used his position to unite Ijebuland, regardless of religious or social differences,” the governor noted.
Abiodun urged the people to reflect on the monarch’s values and continue to uphold peace for the progress of Ogun State and Nigeria.
The prayer service attracted prominent personalities, including Governors Abiodun Oyebanji of Ekiti, Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo, and Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara. Also present were the deputy governors of Ogun, Lagos, and Oyo states; former Ogun governors Olusegun Osoba, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and Ibikunle Amosun; members of the National Assembly; Ogun State House of Assembly Speaker; ministers, and traditional rulers, among others.
