US President Donald Trump injected a dose of humour into the final day of the G7 summit in France when he jokingly declared himself “the boss” while joining fellow world leaders for a key meeting.
The comment came as leaders of the Group of Seven nations assembled for the concluding session of the three-day summit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron in the lakeside town of Evian.
Arriving after other leaders had taken their seats, Trump walked into the meeting room and quipped, “I’m the boss,” prompting laughter from those present. Macron responded with a smile and a brief exchange before the meeting proceeded.
While the remark was made in jest, it reflected the outsized role Trump has played throughout the summit, where discussions have focused on global security, economic cooperation and international diplomacy.
The American president arrived at the gathering buoyed by recent diplomatic developments, including the announcement of an agreement aimed at ending the conflict with Iran. The summit also coincided with celebrations marking his 80th birthday, further adding to the attention surrounding his participation.
For French organisers, Trump's decision to remain for the entire summit represented a notable success. At the previous G7 meeting in Canada, the US president departed before the event ended, creating tensions among allies and declining to endorse the final communiqué.
This year, however, Trump stayed through the closing sessions and joined other leaders in backing the summit's final statement, a move seen as a positive sign of cooperation among member nations.
In a further demonstration of efforts to maintain strong ties between Paris and Washington, Macron extended an invitation to Trump for a post-summit dinner at the Palace of Versailles, one of France's most iconic landmarks.
The French president has nonetheless sought to downplay suggestions that the event amounts to a lavish celebration, insisting it should be viewed as a diplomatic engagement rather than a ceremonial gala.
As the summit concluded, Trump's brief but headline-grabbing declaration once again underscored his ability to dominate the political stage, even at gatherings attended by some of the world's most powerful leaders.
