Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s deteriorating state, declaring that the nation is on a dangerous decline. He called on prominent Nigerians to speak out boldly against the worsening economic and social conditions affecting the country.

Speaking during the ongoing National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Labour Party in Abuja on Wednesday, Obi pointed to the widespread hardship experienced by ordinary citizens as evidence of the country's deepening crisis.

“Do not fear anybody. Those who were afraid yesterday didn’t do any better,” Obi said. “We must speak out when things are going wrong. Nigeria is collapsing. The numbers are clear; the indices are clear—people are getting poorer every day.”

He emphasized the importance of internal unity and inclusiveness within the Labour Party, saying, “Labour Party has chosen to be a family, and we must act as one. It’s not about Peter Obi’s personal choice; it’s about the collective choice of all members. No one is excluded. We are building a party rooted in fairness and justice.”

Looking toward future elections, Obi underscored the need for readiness and the selection of capable candidates across all levels of governance.

“We want to approach the next election fully prepared, offering Nigerians the most competent candidates for the House of Representatives, the Senate, Governorships, and the Presidency,” he said.

He also addressed the need for stronger party loyalty and commitment among aspirants: “We want to correct the mistakes of the past. Anyone seeking to run on our platform must be a dedicated party member, not someone just passing through. Above all, they must be competent.”
