The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Osun State has denied claims that it has entered into a political alliance with the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing a letter circulating on social media to that effect as fake and unauthorised.
The party, in a statement issued on Thursday by its spokesperson, Mr Alao Jeremiah Adewole, said the document did not originate from the Osun SDP and should be ignored by members of the public.
According to the statement, the party's attention was drawn to the letter allegedly signed by an individual claiming to be the SDP State Chairman, a position the party said was falsely represented.
Adewole said the letter was the handiwork of individuals seeking to mislead the public and create confusion ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state.
"The purported letter did not emanate from the Osun State chapter of the Social Democratic Party. It is fake, misleading and does not reflect the position of the party in any way," he said.
The party also clarified that the document was neither issued nor authorised by its governorship candidate, Mr Salawu Adeniyi Mustapha, popularly known as M.A.
Reiterating its position, the SDP maintained that it had not entered into any alliance, merger or political arrangement with the APC or any other political party.
"The Social Democratic Party remains an independent political platform and has not reached any agreement with the APC or any other party concerning the forthcoming governorship election," the statement added.
Adewole urged party members, supporters and residents of the state to disregard the letter and remain vigilant against attempts to spread misinformation.
He stressed that the SDP remains focused on its campaign activities and committed to presenting what he described as a credible alternative to the electorate.
The party expressed confidence in its chances at the poll and called on its supporters not to be distracted by what it termed political propaganda designed to weaken its resolve.
"The SDP remains firmly in the race and is fully prepared for the governorship election. We urge our supporters to remain steadfast and continue mobilising support for the party across the state," the statement said.
