The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned the early endorsement of President Bola Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 election, calling it a desperate move driven by fear of growing public dissatisfaction.

In a statement issued Thursday night, CUPP National Secretary, Peter Ameh, described the action as a sign of panic within the ruling party amid widespread economic hardship across the country.

At the APC National Summit held in Abuja, Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodinma, moved the motion for Tinubu’s sole candidacy, which was seconded by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani and endorsed by other party leaders.

Ameh argued that endorsing a candidate midway through his first term undermines internal democracy and signals the APC’s disconnection from Nigerians battling inflation, fuel scarcity, and rising unemployment.

“This move reveals deep unease within the APC, especially as public anger mounts over the economic pain caused by its policies,” the CUPP said. “It is not the will of the people, who must ultimately decide in 2027.”

CUPP accused the APC of trying to predetermine the outcome of the next presidential election and warned that Nigerians will resist any attempt to manipulate the process.

“We urge citizens to remain alert and united in defence of democracy. The 2027 election will be a turning point, and the people’s voice will prevail,” the statement concluded.
