President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday directed Nigeria’s security chiefs to arrest those responsible for the recent massacre in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, which claimed over 100 lives.
Speaking during a town hall meeting with political leaders in the state, Tinubu expressed frustration over the lack of arrests since the attack, which occurred last Friday.
“Christopher… We need to get our ears to the ground. Let’s get those criminals. Let’s get them out,” Tinubu told the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.
Addressing Governor Hyacinth Alia directly, the President said, “Your political enemies don’t want you to succeed. Are you just realising that?”
He called for unity among Benue leaders and stressed the need for immediate action to restore peace.
“We cannot do without one another. I want us to create a leadership committee right now to meet in Abuja and come up with a strategy for lasting peace. I’m ready to invest in that peace,” Tinubu said.
Earlier, the President visited victims of the attack receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital. He was received by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and Governor Alia.
The attack, allegedly carried out by armed herders, has drawn widespread condemnation, with calls for urgent security intervention in the region.
