The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has confirmed Pastor Peter Akpe as the state’s new deputy governor, filling the vacancy left by the late Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away in December 2025.

Akpe, an ordained minister of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), previously served as Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri. He brings decades of experience spanning the civil service, politics, and legislative leadership.

Before fully transitioning into politics, Akpe worked in the Rivers and Bayelsa state civil services, acquiring administrative experience that later informed his legislative and executive roles.

He was a two-term member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2019, holding the position of Majority Leader throughout his tenure. Earlier, he served as commissioner from 2008 to 2011 during the administration of former Governor Seriake Dickson.

The assembly’s approval now paves the way for Akpe’s swearing-in as deputy governor, a role that will see him support Governor Diri in managing the state’s affairs and advancing the administration’s agenda.

Akpe’s blend of legislative experience, executive service, and pastoral leadership is expected to bring stability and continuity to Bayelsa State’s government following the loss of Ewhrudjakpo.
