The Coalition of Funtua Community-Based Organisations has called for the creation of a new state, to be named Karadua State, from the present Katsina State.
The demand was made on Monday during a public hearing and town hall meeting on proposed amendments to the 1999 Constitution (as amended), held at the State Secretariat in Katsina.
Representing grassroots stakeholders, civil society advocates, and development actors, the group proposed that the new state should be carved out of the Funtua Senatorial Zone, with additional local government areas established to meet population and administrative needs.
Presenting the memorandum on behalf of the coalition, its vice-chairman, Engr. Tukur Lawal, argued that the creation of Karadua State would bring government closer to the people and address the challenges of marginalisation.
“Specifically, we propose the creation of Karadua State from the present Katsina South Senatorial Zone (Funtua Zone), comprising the following 11 Local Government Areas: Funtua, Bakori, Malumfashi, Kafur, Danja, Kankara, Sabuwa, Dandume, Faskari, Musawa, and Matazu,” Lawal stated.
He added that the group is also pushing for the creation of additional councils to reflect “current population size, geographic spread, and administrative demands.”
According to the memorandum, the proposed Karadua State would “facilitate equitable resource allocation, improve infrastructure, enhance political participation, reduce marginalisation, and strengthen security coordination at the grassroots level.”
The group maintained that its demand aligns with “the spirit of federalism” and ongoing national calls for restructuring to ensure balanced development across all regions.
Senator Ibrahim Ida, chairman of the public hearing committee, said the committee is collating the submissions of the coalition and other groups for consideration in the constitutional review process.
