President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renewed the appointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for a five-year term, keeping him at the helm until 2031.
Marwa, a former military governor of Lagos and Borno States, first assumed leadership of the NDLEA in January 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari. Prior to that, he chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to 2020. His reappointment underscores the federal government’s trust in his proven record in combating drug trafficking and abuse.
A seasoned military officer and diplomat, Marwa graduated from the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy, and holds two postgraduate degrees: a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University. Over his career, he has served in key military and diplomatic roles, including Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of Army Staff, academic registrar at the NDA, and Defence Adviser in Nigerian missions in Washington, D.C., and at the United Nations.
Under Marwa’s leadership, the NDLEA has recorded significant achievements, including the arrest of over 73,000 drug mules and traffickers and the seizure of more than 15 million kilogrammes of hard drugs. The agency has also conducted nationwide campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, particularly among young Nigerians.
President Tinubu, endorsing the reappointment, said: “Your reappointment is a vote of confidence in your onerous efforts to rid our country of the menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse. I urge you not to relent in tracking the merchants of hard drugs, out to destroy our people, especially the young ones.”
