A tense security scare rattled Washington, DC, late Saturday after a gunman attempted to breach a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, prompting the swift evacuation of President Donald Trump and triggering a massive law enforcement response.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect, a 31-year-old California man identified as Cole Tomas Allen, has been taken into custody and will face federal charges, including assault on a federal officer and use of a firearm during a crime of violence.
The incident unfolded at the Washington Hilton, where the annual gathering of political leaders, journalists and dignitaries was underway. According to officials, the suspect approached a secured perimeter armed with multiple weapons and attempted to force his way through, leading to shots being fired.
In the ensuing confrontation, a member of the US Secret Service was struck but survived due to protective gear. The agent was rushed to hospital and is said to be in stable condition.
Eyewitness accounts painted a scene of confusion and fear as guests scrambled for safety. Attendees inside the ballroom were instructed to take cover while heavily armed security personnel flooded the area and moved quickly to neutralise the threat.
The suspect was subdued within moments, officials said, preventing what could have become a far more devastating attack.
Trump, who had been addressing the gathering, was immediately escorted off the stage by his security detail. Speaking later at the White House, he said the situation unfolded rapidly and without warning.
“We heard a sound, and within seconds the Secret Service was on it,” he said. “They moved very quickly. Everyone is safe.”
The president praised the injured agent and commended security agencies for what he described as a “flawless response” under pressure.
US Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, confirmed that prosecutors were preparing charges, noting that the suspect’s actions posed a grave threat to federal officials and the public.
Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident. FBI Director Kash Patel said agents were analysing forensic evidence, including a firearm recovered at the scene, while also interviewing witnesses.
Officials said preliminary findings indicate the suspect acted alone. Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser told reporters there was no immediate indication of a wider plot.
“At this stage, we have no evidence suggesting additional suspects,” she said, adding that authorities were working to establish a clear motive.
Investigators are also examining how the suspect, believed to have been a guest at the hotel, was able to get so close to the security perimeter of an event attended by the president and other high-ranking officials.
Security experts say the breach, though quickly contained, will likely prompt a review of existing protocols for high-profile events in the US capital.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is one of Washington’s most prominent annual gatherings, attracting top political figures, media executives and celebrities. The incident has raised fresh concerns about safety at such events, despite extensive security arrangements.
Witnesses described the moment gunfire erupted as surreal. Some said they initially mistook the noise for a dropped object before realising the seriousness of the situation as security agents rushed in.
Authorities credited the rapid and coordinated response of the Secret Service and other agencies with preventing casualties beyond the injured officer.
Secret Service officials later reiterated that their layered security system functioned effectively, allowing them to intercept the suspect before he could enter the main venue.
Trump, who later addressed reporters, acknowledged the risks associated with the presidency but maintained a resolute stance.
“It’s always a dangerous job, but we rely on the best people,” he said.
Officials indicated that the dinner, a key fixture on Washington’s social and political calendar, may be rescheduled with additional safeguards in place.
