Kano APC queries Kwankwaso over Obi’s presence at Sallah gathering

The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has questioned the decision of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to host Peter Obi and other opposition figures during a Sallah celebration in the state.

The event, held on Sunday at Kwankwaso’s Kano residence, was part of the Eid-el-Fitr festivities and attracted prominent political figures, including Seyi Makinde and Seriake Dickson.

Kwankwaso, in a social media post, described the gathering as a moment of unity, extending goodwill and best wishes to Nigerians during the festive period.

However, the APC in Kano expressed reservations over the meeting, particularly questioning Obi’s participation at what it characterised as a Muslim event. Speaking to Punch Newspaper, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Auwal Mai-Nage, said the development was unexpected and politically curious.

Mai-Nage argued that the apparent alignment between Kwankwaso and Obi does not reflect the prevailing political realities in Kano State. He also dismissed the significance of the gathering, citing what he described as a low turnout despite the presence of high-profile politicians.

“For an event of such magnitude, the turnout was underwhelming. Local political actors in Kano can attract larger crowds,” he said.

He further criticised emerging political alliances, alleging that Obi’s political engagements are influenced by regional considerations, and expressed disappointment that Kwankwaso would associate with such a strategy.

Despite its concerns, the APC maintained that the meeting poses no serious political threat within the state.

Meanwhile, observers believe the gathering could point to early efforts at opposition collaboration ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially following a recent meeting between Kwankwaso and Makinde in Ibadan.

In a separate development, Kwankwaso urged members of the Kwankwasiyya movement to remain steadfast and committed to their shared vision. Addressing supporters during the annual Sallah homage in Kano, he expressed appreciation for their loyalty and continued support.

The former governor also acknowledged the presence of key stakeholders, including the Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, lawmakers, and officials of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), alongside other political allies.

He described the Sallah homage as a long-standing tradition and commended supporters, organisers, and entertainers for their contributions to the success of the event.
