Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged the Federal Government to engage more closely with the United States in addressing Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and terrorism.
Obi made the call following recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, who threatened possible military action in Nigeria over alleged genocide against Christians, and Washington’s designation of the country as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC).
In a statement on Monday, Obi expressed deep concern over the development, describing it as a wake-up call for the Nigerian government to act decisively against insecurity. He said Trump’s comments underscore the growing perception that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has failed to demonstrate the capacity to protect its citizens and maintain peace.
“The recent pronouncement by the US government declaring Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ and indicating possible military action should give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern,” Obi said.
“There is no doubt that Nigeria is witnessing an unprecedented level of insecurity, with alarming loss of lives and property. According to Amnesty International, over 10,000 people have been killed in Nigeria since May 2023. These unprovoked and senseless killings are condemnable, and every effort must be made to bring them to an end.”
The former governor said Nigeria’s security situation is the product of years of poor governance and lack of accountability, noting that the current administration has failed to show the competence and political will needed to reverse the trend.
“While insecurity did not begin with this government, what is most unfortunate is the lack of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism and passion on the part of the APC-led government to effectively govern and lead Nigeria toward peace, truth, and justice,” Obi stated.
He emphasised that Nigeria and the United States have a long-standing strategic relationship anchored on democratic values, peace, and regional stability, urging both countries to strengthen that bond to combat terrorism and extremism.
“As democracies, Nigeria and the United States have long been partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not falter,” he said. “The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic engagement and every possible collaboration between both nations to address the prevailing security challenges. Both countries must act swiftly and cooperatively to that end.”
Obi added that restoring security in Nigeria requires both international collaboration and competent domestic leadership capable of protecting lives and rebuilding trust. He stressed that Nigeria’s credibility on the global stage depends on its ability to ensure safety, justice, and equality for all its citizens.
