2027: NNPP moves to back ADC presidential ticket as Kwankwaso defects

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has indicated that it will support the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket in the 2027 general election as part of efforts by opposition parties to form a broader political coalition.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, disclosed this on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, noting that the NNPP would align with the ADC at the presidential level while still participating in other elections across the country.

Johnson explained that the party intends to field candidates in several elective positions but would support a unified opposition front for the presidency in order to strengthen the chances of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The NNPP will continue to contest elections. Although at the presidential level we will be in alignment with the ADC and possibly some national elections, we are going to have candidates down the ballot,” he said.

The announcement comes as the party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, prepares to formally join the ADC after resigning from the NNPP.

Johnson confirmed that Kwankwaso would officially register as a member of the ADC in Kano State on Monday, adding that his decision followed extensive consultations among key opposition figures.

“He resigned from the NNPP and will join the ADC today in Kano State,” Johnson stated.

According to him, opposition leaders have been engaged in discussions aimed at building a stronger coalition capable of presenting a credible alternative in the 2027 elections.

“There were extensive discussions. Some opposition leaders have decided that it will best serve their purposes and those of Nigerians to come together under one platform as an alternative for 2027,” he added.

Kwankwaso’s defection follows weeks of political consultations involving leaders of the Kwankwasiyya movement and senior officials within the ADC as part of efforts to forge a united opposition front.

In recent weeks, the former governor held several high-level meetings with influential political actors across the country to explore the possibility of forming a broad coalition ahead of the next general election.

Among those he met were the National Secretary of the ADC, Rauf Aregbesola; the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi; Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde; and Bayelsa West Senator Seriake Dickson.

Kwankwaso also met with political leaders and stakeholders in Kano State last week to rally support among members of the Kwankwasiyya movement ahead of his planned defection.

On Sunday, he formally announced his resignation from the NNPP, citing the need for strategic political realignment in response to the country’s evolving political situation.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” Kwankwaso said.

“As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make. However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”

The development comes amid growing tensions within the Kwankwasiyya political movement following the recent defection of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to the ruling APC.

Yusuf moved to the APC alongside several lawmakers and political appointees, a decision that deepened divisions within the political structure built by Kwankwaso.

The former governor openly criticised the move, describing it as a betrayal and a departure from the political ideals of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

Political observers say the NNPP’s decision to align with the ADC reflects increasing efforts among opposition leaders to consolidate forces ahead of the 2027 general election.

The emerging alliance is also seen as part of broader consultations among opposition stakeholders seeking to establish a stronger and more unified political platform capable of challenging the APC in the next presidential contest.
