The attempt by the Department of State Services (DSS) to frame the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, for terrorism has drawn the serious attention of Daniel, Lord Hannan, Baron of Kingsclere, a member of the Board of Trade and Conservative peer.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Baron of Kingsclere urged for respect for the law and the independence of public officials while regretting the assault on Nigeria's democracy and institutions.
He bemoaned the decline of democracy worldwide and urged supporters of Nigerian democracy to stand up for the rule of law.
"The rule of law, due process, and the independence of public officials: these values important," the declaration states. They tie the Commonwealth of Nations together. I'm not from Nigeria. It is not my place to judge whether it is time to redesign naira notes or whether doing so will result in more fair elections. But I do believe that those who support Nigeria and its democracy should stand up for the rule of law there.
"At a time when democracy is under threat everywhere, Nigeria's success is in everyone's interest. The nation has Africa's largest population, economy, and population density.
