Kaduna restores Christian pilgrimage after 11-year freeze under El-Rufai

Governor Uba Sani has approved 50 Christians from Kaduna State to undertake holy pilgrimage, formally ending an 11-year suspension introduced during the administration of former governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The Christian pilgrimage programme was halted after the scrapping of the state’s Christian Pilgrims Welfare Agency under El-Rufai, a decision that drew criticism from sections of the Christian community at the time.

The revival of the scheme has been welcomed by the Kaduna chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which described the development as a positive signal of inclusion and religious balance.

Speaking in a telephone interview on Wednesday, the state CAN chairman, Rev. Ma’aji Bawa, expressed appreciation to Governor Sani for what he termed a thoughtful and unifying decision.

“For 11 years, Christians in Kaduna State have not had the opportunity to embark on pilgrimage through the state. This approval of 50 pilgrims is a welcome development and a sign of renewed hope,” Bawa said.

He described the number as modest but meaningful.

“Fifty may appear small, but it is a starting point. We are optimistic that subsequent exercises will accommodate more faithful who desire to undertake the spiritual journey,” he added.

Bawa stressed that pilgrimage should not be misconstrued as a leisure trip but regarded as a solemn spiritual obligation.

“Pilgrimage is a sacred assignment. Those going are expected to seek God’s face and pray for peace, unity and development in Kaduna State and Nigeria,” he said.

He further noted that restoring the programme demonstrates the government’s recognition of the importance of faith communities in promoting social harmony.

“This decision reflects inclusiveness and strengthens the bond between the government and the Christian community,” he stated.

However, the cleric called for a transparent and credible selection process to ensure that beneficiaries are spiritually committed and capable of representing the state with dignity.

He also urged Christians in the state to remain law-abiding, prayerful and supportive of policies that foster unity and development.

Bawa expressed hope that the reinstatement of the pilgrimage scheme would encourage greater interfaith understanding and contribute to spiritual renewal across Kaduna State.
