Plateau State Governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), days after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a move that signals a major political shift in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The governor’s entry into the APC was announced on Friday by the party’s National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, in a social media post confirming Mutfwang’s decision to join the ruling party.

Mutfwang’s defection follows his resignation from the PDP, conveyed in a letter dated December 29, 2025, and addressed to the Ward Chairman of the party in Ampang West Ward, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

In the letter, the governor said he was quitting the PDP with immediate effect, while expressing gratitude to the party for providing him the platform to participate in the democratic process. He thanked party leaders, members and supporters for their backing during his time in the opposition party.

Explaining his decision, Mutfwang cited prevailing political realities and his commitment to purposeful leadership, clarity of direction and effective service delivery, which he said compelled him to seek an alternative political platform.

Although the resignation letter did not state his next political destination, party sources had earlier confirmed his planned defection to the APC, a move that has now been formally consummated.

Mutfwang, a lawyer, was elected governor on the PDP platform in the 2023 governorship election. His defection is seen as a major blow to the PDP in Plateau State and underscores the wave of high-profile defections ahead of the 2027 polls.
