Senator Natasha’s lawyers slam federal charges, accuse FG of bias

The legal representatives of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan have criticised the Federal Government over its recent criminal charges against the Kogi Central lawmaker, accusing it of turning a blind eye to serious complaints she filed earlier this year.

In a statement released Wednesday in Abuja, her counsel, Uju Nwoduwu, described the development as a disturbing case of selective justice, revealing that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had submitted 12 petitions between March and May 2025—none of which have been acted upon.

“These petitions include grave allegations such as cyberstalking, threats to life, defamation, and even an attempted assassination plot involving a protocol officer,” the statement said.

Despite the weight of the complaints and the high-profile individuals implicated—among them Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello—the legal team said no investigations have been launched by the Nigeria Police or any other relevant authority.

“While Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s complaints remain untouched, counter-allegations by those she petitioned have been swiftly processed, leading to questionable criminal charges against her,” the lawyers stated, warning that such actions undermine public confidence in the justice system.

They argued that the government’s apparent double standards in handling politically sensitive matters point to bias, adding that justice should never be wielded as a weapon to silence dissent or opposition voices.

The legal team confirmed that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is currently outside the country, has received official notification of the charges and intends to honour any court date once it is formally set.

“She remains committed to due process and will cooperate fully with judicial proceedings,” the statement affirmed, while thanking the public for its widespread condemnation of what the lawyers called “an extremely curious prosecution.”

They concluded with a renewed appeal for a transparent and impartial investigation into all outstanding petitions, stressing that true justice must be even-handed and apolitical.
