Edo officials resign from Okpebholo’s cabinet to contest 2027 elections

Several senior political appointees in Edo State have stepped down from their government positions to pursue elective offices in the 2027 general elections, following a directive from Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Washington Osifo, Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, resigned to run for the Uhunmwode/Orhionmwon federal constituency seat, currently held by Hon. Billy Osawaru.

Also among those who resigned is Plus Alile, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, who is seeking election to the Egor/Ikpoba-Okha federal constituency.

Two board members also left their positions: Osaze Igbinovia of the Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission and Terry Igiebor of the Edo State Audit Commission.

Governor Okpebholo had earlier directed all political appointees and civil servants intending to run for elective office to resign by March 1, a move designed to ensure a level playing field for all candidates.

The resignations mark the start of political maneuvering in Edo State, with key officials positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
