Bayelsa State governor, Douye Diri, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alongside 23 members of the State House of Assembly, marking another major blow to the opposition party.
The development was confirmed on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, in a post on Facebook.
Although Governor Diri did not disclose his next political move, insiders suggest he may be on his way to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or considering an alliance with The NEW Associates, a growing political movement loyal to President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Diri’s exit comes months after 27 of his aides were sacked for attending the inauguration of The NEW Associates in Yenagoa and participating in a rally that pledged support for Tinubu and Wike.
His resignation follows that of Enugu State governor, Peter Mbah, who on Tuesday officially dumped the PDP for the APC, alongside his predecessor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and several lawmakers.
Mbah said his defection was driven by his desire to align with the APC’s “vision for development and progress” and to work within a platform “where the people’s interest would be represented and respected.”
With two PDP governors quitting in less than 48 hours, analysts say the opposition party may be heading for its toughest test yet ahead of the 2027 general elections.
