The Federal High Court in Abuja has affirmed the removal of Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee as the party’s lawful executive.
Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Peter Lifu upheld the Usman-led committee as the valid leadership, stating that Abure’s tenure as national chairman had expired. This aligns with a previous Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025 (Appeal No. SC/CV/56/2025).
The ruling followed a suit marked THC/ABJ/CS/2262/2025, filed by Abure. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) was also named as a defendant in the matter.
Justice Lifu dismissed Abure’s claim that the case was an internal party matter and therefore non-justiciable. The court held that the formation of the LP Caretaker Committee was necessary following the Supreme Court order.
The decision comes after the LP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) removed Abure amid a leadership crisis and constituted a 29-member caretaker committee led by former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman.
