The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has approved the appointment of Senator Ben Obi as Secretary of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) for the party’s 2025 Elective National Convention.

Obi replaces Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, who held the position before his recent defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP national convention is scheduled to hold from November 15 to 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The appointment, which was ratified by the NWC on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC), was announced in a statement on Wednesday by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, who also serves as Secretary of the Publicity and Communication Sub-Committee of the NCOC.

According to the statement, Senator Obi, a veteran politician and former Presidential Adviser, “brings to the role decades of experience in party administration and national politics.”

The development comes amid a wave of defections from the opposition party, including those of Governor Mbah and his Bayelsa counterpart, Douye Diri, to the APC — a move that has stirred anxiety within the PDP’s ranks.

However, Umar Sani, former media aide to ex-Vice President Namadi Sambo, downplayed concerns over the defections, insisting that the PDP remains focused and unshaken.

Meanwhile, the Forum of PDP State Chairmen has accused the APC of using “desperate and coercive tactics” to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections, while the party’s Northern Support Group alleged that some members of the NWC were working to frustrate preparations for the upcoming convention.

Despite the internal and external pressures, the PDP leadership maintains that preparations for the November convention are on track, with Obi expected to play a key role in steering the process.
