The Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has commended Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, for granting clemency to Sunday Jackson, a Christian farmer who was sentenced to death following a violent incident on his farmland.

Governor Fintiri approved the pardon on Tuesday, triggering scenes of jubilation across parts of Adamawa State, particularly in Yola, where residents trooped out to celebrate what many described as a long-awaited act of justice.

In a Christmas message jointly signed by its Chairman, Rev. Joseph Hayab, and Secretary-General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, Northern CAN said the initial conviction represented a miscarriage of justice and praised the governor’s intervention for restoring faith in fairness and the rule of law.

The association said the decision reaffirmed the principle that self-defence in the face of mortal danger should not be treated as a crime, especially in a country grappling with terrorism, banditry and widespread insecurity.

While applauding Governor Fintiri’s action, Northern CAN urged leaders at all levels to seize the Christmas season as a moment for national reflection, renewal and recommitment to justice, equity and peace.

The group also called on the Federal Government to intensify investigations into the sponsors and financiers of violent crimes, warning that meaningful peace would remain elusive unless those behind terrorism and banditry were exposed and prosecuted.

Northern CAN noted that Christmas offers Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s moral conscience and social direction, urging citizens to embrace compassion, respect for human life and peaceful coexistence.

The association commended individuals, faith-based organisations and community leaders who supported vulnerable citizens through palliative distribution and humanitarian gestures during the festive season, describing such efforts as a reflection of enduring values of love and collective responsibility.

On the security situation, Northern CAN praised the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices in protecting lives and property, while urging them to remain steadfast until insecurity is decisively addressed.

It also welcomed the Federal Government’s recent designation of kidnappers, bandits and other violent groups as terrorists, saying the move strengthened the country’s security framework and demonstrated resolve in confronting criminality.

The association concluded by urging leaders to uphold the rule of law and justice, while calling on Nigerians to remain law-abiding and committed to national unity.

“As we celebrate Christmas, let us pray for the healing of our land and work together for a safer, more just and united Nigeria,” the statement said.
