Dumebi Kachikwu, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has alleged that Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is already considering leaving the recently unveiled ADC coalition.
Obi, alongside other opposition leaders, joined the coalition earlier in July as part of efforts to build a formidable platform to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections. Within days of the coalition’s launch, Obi declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidency, despite remaining a member of the LP.
Kachikwu, however, insists that Obi has realised the coalition is designed to advance former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s political ambition.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Kachikwu said:
“The entire ADC structure is being packaged for Atiku Abubakar. I’ve been warning Nigerians about this. Today, it’s clear that this coalition isn’t what it was presented to be. Peter Obi now understands that it’s all about Atiku. We are seeing signs that he is looking elsewhere, as others with similar ambitions now know that this so-called coalition was never genuine—it’s simply a vehicle for Atiku’s agenda.”
Kachikwu vowed to resist what he described as a political hijack of his party, insisting that the 2027 elections will not provide space for “class exploitation” by the political elite.
“Our people must be aware of the games these politicians play. I will do everything to ensure Nigerians are enlightened and empowered to hold them accountable,” he added.
