Democrats recorded significant victories in major elections across the United States on Tuesday, delivering a political setback to President Donald Trump and signalling potential shifts ahead of future national contests.
In New York, Zohran Mamdani – a Muslim lawmaker and self-described democratic socialist – is projected by NBC News to become the city’s next mayor. His likely win marks a notable ideological change at the helm of America’s largest city.
Democrats also swept the top statewide offices in Virginia. Abigail Spanberger is on course to become the state’s first female governor, while Jay Jones defeated Republican incumbent Jason Miyares to secure the attorney general’s seat, strengthening Democratic control in Richmond.
On the West Coast, California voters approved Proposition 50, a constitutional amendment that will allow the state to adopt a new congressional map expected to favour Democrats in federal House races.
In Pennsylvania, voters retained three Democratic justices on the state Supreme Court, preserving the party’s 5–2 majority on a bench that plays a critical role in election and governance disputes.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer hailed the results as a clear rebuke of Trump’s political message.
“American voters are rejecting chaos and division,” Schumer said. “They are choosing a path of stability and progress.”
Trump, in a social media reaction, blamed the Republican setbacks on his absence from the ballots and the ongoing federal government shutdown that began on October 1.
One of the night’s more surprising outcomes came from Virginia, where Jones prevailed despite last-minute controversy over leaked 2022 text messages in which he fantasised about shooting then–Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert. The revelation did not prevent voters from delivering him a victory.
The results strengthen Democratic momentum heading into the next election cycle and deepen internal debate within the Republican Party over its continued alignment with Trump.
