President Bola Tinubu has reportedly appointed Tunji Disu, FCT police commissioner and former Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The appointment follows the removal of Kayode Egbetokun, sources confirmed on Tuesday. According to reports, Egbetokun was asked on Monday to prepare his handover notes to facilitate a smooth transition.
Egbetokun’s tenure as IGP had been overshadowed by a series of controversies. His extended stay in office, which surpassed the mandatory retirement age of 60 or 35 years of service, drew criticism and sparked debates over favoritism and the apparent disregard for institutional rules.
Critics also raised concerns about alleged irregular promotions within his office, particularly that of Bukola Yemisi Kuti, a Principal Staff Officer reportedly linked to Egbetokun personally.
Tunji Disu’s appointment marks a new chapter for the Nigeria Police Force, with expectations that his leadership will focus on restoring discipline and addressing longstanding institutional challenges.
