Akpabio returns from London, declares self fit

Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, has returned to Nigeria, insisting he is in good health despite widespread speculation on social media that he had been hospitalised abroad.

Akpabio, 62, arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday, where he was welcomed by senators, aides, and loyalists at the presidential wing.

Speaking to reporters, he dismissed the rumours as baseless. “I am fit as a fiddle. There’s nothing like what people are saying. I only stopped over in London for a short vacation after attending an international conference,” he said.

The Senate President had participated in the sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament held in Geneva, Switzerland, between July 29 and 31, before travelling to the United Kingdom. He said Nigeria’s delegation made “significant contributions” at the gathering, particularly on strengthening democratic institutions and enhancing collaboration between parliaments and governments.

Akpabio assured that the National Assembly would resume from recess with renewed energy. “Nigerians should expect robust legislative engagements when we reconvene,” he added.

His statement echoed earlier remarks by Senator Gbenga Daniel, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, who dismissed reports of Akpabio’s ill health.

“The news was that you had been indisposed, but seeing you now gives us a different picture entirely. Congratulations, your excellency,” Daniel told him during a private meeting in London.

Akpabio, who became Senate President in June 2023, previously served as governor of Akwa Ibom State and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.
