The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has received 10 additional letters of intent from groups seeking registration as political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This was disclosed on Thursday in a statement by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.
With the latest submissions, the number of associations seeking registration has risen to 144.
INEC had earlier, on June 25, reported a surge in applications, with 110 groups submitting letters of intent. Since then, the commission has received 34 more applications.
Portal ready for use
Olumekun said the commission is in the process of evaluating all the submissions to determine which associations meet the requirements to advance to the next stage of the registration process.
“In our last press release, we assured Nigerians that we are finalising the necessary tests on the party registration portal designed and built in-house by our ICT officials.
“As is the case with all our IT innovations, the new portal has been demonstrated before the commission and approved for deployment.
“The commission is evaluating all the letters of intent received so far to determine the associations that meet the requirements to proceed to the application stage. A report is expected at our next regular meeting,” he stated.
Olumekun added that the names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leaderships of the new associations have been published on INEC’s website and other platforms for public information.
The commission also pledged to keep Nigerians updated on all its ongoing activities.
