Nigeria’s judiciary has been thrown into mourning following the death of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad.
Muhammad reportedly died in the early hours of Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at a hospital in Saudi Arabia after a prolonged illness. He was 71 years old.
The passing of the former head of the judiciary was confirmed by sources within judicial circles and members of his family. A condolence statement issued in Abuja by the Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS) also confirmed the development.
In the statement titled “NAMLAS Condolence Message on the Passing of Hon. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, GCON, Former Chief Justice of Nigeria,” the association described his death as a major loss to Nigeria.
“Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return,” the statement read. “The Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students receives with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Honourable Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, GCON. His demise is a monumental loss to the Nigerian judiciary, the legal profession, the Muslim Ummah, and the nation.”
NAMLAS described the late jurist as a man of integrity and humility who remained steadfast in his commitment to justice throughout his career.
“Justice Muhammad exemplified the finest ideals of the Bench—fairness, courage, and unwavering adherence to the rule of law,” the association said, noting that his tenure as Chief Justice was marked by wisdom, restraint, and dedication to service.
Born on December 31, 1953, in Doguwa, Giade Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Tanko Muhammad began his judicial career as a Magistrate before rising through the ranks. He was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2006.
He became the 17th Chief Justice of Nigeria in 2019 following the removal of Justice Walter Onnoghen. In 2022, he stepped down from office, citing health-related reasons.
Justice Tanko Muhammad is remembered as a disciplined jurist whose legacy continues to shape Nigeria’s legal landscape.
