The Nigerian Navy has announced a major shake-up in its top hierarchy, redeploying 65 Rear Admirals to new commands and strategic roles across the service, the Defence Headquarters, and other Tri-Service institutions.
The large-scale exercise, approved by the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, was disclosed in a statement on Monday by the Director of Naval Information, Commodore Ayiwuyor Adams-Aliu.
According to Adams-Aliu, the redeployment aims to strengthen operational effectiveness, improve administrative efficiency, and enhance the Navy’s overall maritime security posture.
“The postings are part of ongoing efforts by the Chief of Naval Staff to reposition the Nigerian Navy for optimal performance and inter-service synergy,” the statement read in part.
Among those affected, Rear Admiral Suleiman Abdullahi, formerly at the Defence Headquarters, is now Chief of Logistics at the Naval Headquarters. Rear Admiral Kasim Bushi moves from the Naval Training Command to the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria as Executive Director.
Also, Rear Admiral Suleiman Dahun has been appointed Director of Defence Cooperation at the Defence Headquarters, while Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed becomes the new Commandant of the National Defence College.
At the Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral Musa Katagum takes over as Chief of Operations, Rear Admiral Fredrick Damtong assumes the role of Chief of Naval Engineering, and Rear Admiral Abdul-Rasheed Haruna becomes Chief of Training.
In the regional commands, Rear Admiral Abiodun Alade is now the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Logistics Command; Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha is FOC, Western Naval Command; Rear Admiral Chidozie Okehie becomes FOC, Eastern Naval Command; and Rear Admiral Suleiman Ibrahim takes over as FOC, Central Naval Command.
Other key appointments include Rear Admiral Mohammed Muye, who is now the Commandant of the Naval War College Nigeria, and Rear Admiral Abdul-Hamid Baba-Inna, who has been appointed Navy Secretary.
Vice Admiral Abbas, in his congratulatory message to the newly appointed officers, urged them to justify the trust placed in them by demonstrating loyalty, discipline, and renewed commitment to duty.
He noted that the restructuring was aimed at injecting new energy into the system and improving coordination across commands to better address evolving maritime threats.
“The Nigerian Navy remains committed to safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain and ensuring effective collaboration with other security agencies to protect national interests,” the CNS stated.
The new postings take immediate effect.
