Peter Obi aware of my meeting with Abure-led NEC – Datti Baba-Ahmed

The 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Datti Baba-Ahmed, has insisted that his principal, Peter Obi, was fully briefed about his decision to attend the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting convened by the Julius Abure-led faction of the party.

Appearing on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Baba-Ahmed dismissed speculation that his attendance at the meeting signalled disunity within the party, describing himself as a “peacemaker” working to resolve internal disputes.

“Labour Party is not a party to abandon or ignore,” he said. “Every step I take is transparent, and those who need to know are always aware. His Excellency Peter Obi is aware of my actions. There is no confusion about that.”

Baba-Ahmed said the NEC meeting was part of broader efforts to unite factions within the Labour Party and rebuild its structure ahead of the 2027 elections.

“I have been calling for dialogue. My role is to bring everyone to the table and rebuild the trust needed to move forward. The Labour Party still has a vital mission to rescue Nigeria, and this can only happen through unity,” he stated.

He added that the party, like other political organisations, had been affected by “the captors of the Nigerian state,” but maintained that reconciliation among stakeholders was non-negotiable.

Response to Obidient Movement’s Yunusa Tanko

Reacting to a statement by Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, who claimed that Obi’s supporters were unaware of his meeting with the Abure-led faction, Baba-Ahmed said the comments were misplaced.

“I don’t report to Mr. Tanko; I speak directly with our leader, Peter Obi, and I did. He probably hasn’t had the time to update those around him. But I can assure you, he is fully aware of everything I do,” Baba-Ahmed said.

“I’m happy to have loyal people like Tanko around, but I work with Obi directly. There is no misunderstanding on this matter.”
