Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), paving the way for his imminent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement released on Sunday, Kwankwaso described the decision as a difficult one, reflecting his long-standing commitment to the NNPP. He explained that the move is motivated by the need for strategic realignment in response to Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
“As a committed and bona fide member of the party, leaving was not easy. Yet, given the current trajectory of our nation’s politics, it has become necessary to identify with another platform that offers the best opportunity to effect positive change,” he said.
Kwankwaso expressed gratitude to the party leadership, including NNPP National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees, and all party officials at every level for their support. He also acknowledged members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and other supporters for their dedication.
Reports indicate that Kwankwaso is expected to formally join the ADC on Monday in Kano State, where he will be received by ADC National Chairman David Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola. Sources say the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, may also join him in the move.
The resignation follows a recent courtesy visit to Abuja, where Kwankwaso met with former PDP presidential candidate and ADC stalwart, Atiku Abubakar, to discuss the country’s political and socio-economic developments. Atiku described the meeting as a constructive discussion on national issues.
Political analysts view Kwankwaso’s departure from the NNPP as a major shift in northern Nigerian politics, likely to strengthen the ADC and influence upcoming electoral contests.
