The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has fired back at former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, accusing him of being a confused politician whose recent utterances pose a threat to Nigeria’s stability and progress.
El-Rufai had at the weekend warned that Nigeria’s social cohesion may collapse if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu wins a second term in 2027. He made the statement in Sokoto during a grassroots mobilisation event organised by the opposition coalition platform, the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Reacting to the comment, the APC, through its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said El-Rufai has descended into political irrelevance since his failed attempt to secure a ministerial position in the current administration.
"His speedy fall from the commanding heights of public service to the political clown he has become needs forensic study," Morka said in a statement on Sunday.
"His attack on President Bola Tinubu’s administration as incompetent, clannish, and undeserving of a second term is yet another outburst from a waspish politician whose bitterness has overwhelmed his better judgement."
The party described El-Rufai and his ADC allies as “confused, rudderless and pitiful opposition politicians,” driven by “oversized egos, entitlement mentality, desperation, and blind ambition.”
APC challenged El-Rufai and other opposition figures to present alternative policy ideas instead of launching what it described as baseless criticisms of Tinubu’s reforms.
“If they detest the administration’s economic policies so much, let them come forward with proposals to restore the fuel subsidy, fix the naira artificially, and reinstate multiple exchange rate regimes — the same ruinous policies that benefited the likes of El-Rufai, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi for decades,” the statement said.
“And while they’re at it, they should also explain how they intend to fund the massive deficits that such backward policies would create.”
Morka added that El-Rufai’s claim that Tinubu’s government is clannish is both unfounded and self-serving.
“The rejection of El-Rufai as a minister cannot justify his reckless accusation of clannishness. Only someone who arrogantly equates his personal interest with that of an entire ethnic group would make such a baseless claim.”
The party concluded by expressing confidence that Nigerians will renew President Tinubu’s mandate in 2027, hailing what it called “the most outstanding first-term performance of any president in Nigeria’s history.”
