The Sokoto State government has declared its readiness to engage in dialogue with armed groups willing to genuinely surrender, as part of efforts to restore lasting peace and security in the state.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Security to Governor Ahmed Aliyu, Col. Ahmed Usman (rtd), on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the government believes that dialogue offers a more sustainable solution to insecurity than continued armed confrontation.
“History has shown that many conflicts are resolved not by force alone, but through meaningful dialogue. We are open to negotiating with any bandits who sincerely wish to lay down their arms and reintegrate into society,” the statement said.
The government expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the service chiefs, and frontline security personnel for their commitment to peace and stability in the region.
“We thank our gallant officers for their sacrifices. May Allah bless the souls of those we’ve lost and comfort their families,” it added.
On the federal government’s plan to deploy forest guards across the region, the Sokoto State government welcomed the initiative but stressed the need for transparency in recruitment and strict oversight.
“Forest guards must be selected based on integrity and local credibility, and operate under the close supervision of conventional security agencies to ensure accountability and prevent misuse of power,” the statement emphasized.
It further noted that strong communication between forest guards and local communities is essential for building trust and securing public support.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the government pledged continued support for initiatives aimed at achieving long-term peace and security in Sokoto and beyond.
