Northern govs demand 6-month mining ban over insecurity

Northern governors have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to suspend all mining activities in the region for six months, citing illegal mining as a key driver of insecurity, including banditry, abductions, and attacks on communities.

The call was made in a communiqué issued after a joint meeting of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council on Monday at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna. The communiqué was signed by NSGF Chairman, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State.

The governors said illegal mining has “become a major contributory factor to the security crises in Northern Nigeria,” and urged the federal government to direct the Minister of Solid Minerals to suspend mining exploration for six months to allow a thorough audit. They also recommended a six-month revalidation of all mining licences in active consultation with state governments to curb artisanal and unlawful mining activities.

The communiqué extended condolences to the governments and people of Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Sokoto, Jigawa, and Kano States over recent killings and abductions, as well as to Borno and Yobe States, which continue to experience Boko Haram attacks. The governors commended the Tinubu administration for efforts leading to the prompt release of some abducted children and other victims.

The forum reaffirmed its support for the creation of State Police, urging regional lawmakers to expedite action on legislation to make the policy a reality.

Sultan of Sokoto Urges Governors to Embrace Criticism

At the meeting, Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar II, Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council, advised northern governors to listen carefully to critics and constructive feedback, warning that ignoring public concerns could slow progress in tackling insecurity, poverty, and economic challenges.

The Sultan stressed that leaders should not dismiss criticism, noting that genuine feedback can guide better governance. He encouraged closer collaboration between governors and traditional rulers across the North, suggesting structured meetings to harmonise decisions affecting the region.

The Sultan also reminded governors of the importance of unity, urging them to lead with transparency, inclusiveness, and responsiveness to citizens’ needs.
