Strong indications have emerged that former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is edging closer to defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Party insiders confirmed that Kwankwaso has been in advanced consultations with the APC national chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, over his return to the party. Sources further disclosed that the former governor has formally written to the APC national secretariat in Abuja to notify the party of his intention.
Although Business Hallmark could not independently verify the letter, a senior official at the APC secretariat in Abuja confirmed that discussions between Kwankwaso and the leadership have been ongoing. “This follows his recent meeting with the presidency. As a party, we will abide by whatever decision the leaders feel is in the interest of the APC,” the official said.
Kwankwaso, who led the NNPP to victory in Kano’s 2023 governorship election through his protégé, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, is said to have submitted conditions for his return. Among them, according to sources, is securing the APC governorship ticket for Yusuf in the next election, while Kwankwaso himself would be assured of a significant role in any future APC-led government.
Interestingly, Kwankwaso bypassed the Kano APC chapter - where he has long had a bitter rivalry with local leaders - and directed his letter straight to the party’s national leadership in Abuja. “We are aware of the letter, but discussions are still ongoing. If he comes, he is welcome,” a Kano APC insider confirmed.
Political observers say the move is a clear signal that Kwankwaso may have finally settled on his next political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
