Otti lists 414 roads, debt reduction as gains of three years in Abia

Governor Alex Otti has said his administration has delivered 414 road projects covering more than 864 kilometres across Abia State within three years, while also cutting the state’s debt profile by nearly 60 per cent.

Speaking during the monthly media interaction, “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” in Umuahia on Friday night, the governor said his government remained committed to rebuilding infrastructure, strengthening fiscal discipline and improving public services.

Otti explained that the completed roads were equipped with drainage systems and streetlights, adding that 82 additional roads stretching about 212 kilometres were currently under construction.

“We are consistent in delivering roads with streetlights and drainage, and many of them will be commissioned beginning from next week,” he stated.

The governor disclosed that Abia’s debt stock, which stood at about N191 billion in 2023, had dropped to below N50 billion as of the end of 2025.

He also pointed to improvements in governance and transparency, noting that Abia climbed from 17th position in the BudgIT State of States ranking in 2023 to fourth position in 2025.

According to him, the administration had also identified and documented assets allegedly acquired unlawfully as part of efforts to deepen accountability in government.

On sanitation and environmental management, Otti said the state now evacuates about 13 tonnes of waste weekly, while the activities of the Abia State Environmental Agency had generated more than 2,000 jobs.

In the transport sector, the governor announced that more electric buses would arrive in the state by July to strengthen the ongoing mass transit programme.

He further revealed that a new bus terminal in Umuahia would be inaugurated on May 27, while charging stations for the electric buses were being installed in Umuahia and Aba.

Otti also highlighted reforms in land administration, saying that 4,707 Certificates of Occupancy had been signed under his government, surpassing the total number issued in the state between 1999 and 2023.

He added that the Abia Master Plan had been completed in partnership with UN-Habitat, while about four million land records had been digitised.

Speaking on education and healthcare, the governor said his administration had established smart schools, recruited teachers and upgraded institutions such as Abia State University, ASCETA and Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic.

He disclosed that 821 health workers had been recruited, with 771 already deployed to hospitals and primary healthcare centres across the state.

According to him, more than 93,000 residents had enrolled in the state health insurance scheme, while 277 primary healthcare centres had been retrofitted statewide.

“Out of the 277 healthcare centres retrofitted, 200 were handled by the state government while 77 were supported by the World Bank. So far, 121 of them are fully functionalised,” he said.

The governor further stated that reconstruction works were ongoing at General Hospitals in Ikwuano, Arochukwu, Okeikpe and Ohafia, alongside major upgrades at Amachara and the Abia State University Teaching Hospital.

Otti reiterated that his administration would continue to prioritise infrastructure renewal, prudent financial management and social welfare programmes aimed at improving the lives of Abia residents.
