Armed security operatives on Wednesday prevented a group of retired military personnel from staging a protest at the Ministry of Defence in Abuja over the delay in implementing consequential adjustments to their pensions.
The ex-servicemen had converged in the area to press their demand for the payment of pension adjustments arising from increases in the salaries and allowances of serving members of the Armed Forces.
However, armed policemen and soldiers deployed around the Ministry of Defence stopped the retirees from gathering at the planned protest location.
The presence of the security personnel effectively disrupted the demonstration, with the ex-servicemen unable to proceed with their planned action at the ministry.
The retirees have been demanding that the Federal Government implement the consequential adjustments to their pensions, arguing that pensioners should benefit from salary reviews approved for serving military personnel.
They have also raised concerns over the impact of the delay on their welfare, particularly amid rising living costs and the broader economic pressures facing retired personnel.
Wednesday’s incident marks another development in the long-running agitation by military pensioners for improved welfare and the implementation of outstanding pension adjustments.
The ex-servicemen are expected to continue engaging the authorities over their demands, including the implementation of the consequential pension adjustments.
