NGF explains secretariat shake-up, says changes aim to boost capacity

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has dismissed speculations that recent changes in its secretariat leadership were punitive, clarifying that the restructuring is part of efforts to strengthen its operational efficiency and strategic engagement.

In a major reorganisation, the forum announced four senior-level appointments: Dr Abdulateef Shittu as Director General; Mr Edmund Nnaji, Executive Director, Finance and Administration; Prof. Dauda Olalekan Yinusa, Executive Director, Policy, Strategy and Research; and Dr Ahmad Abdulwahab, Executive Director, Programmes and Partnerships.

Speaking on the development, NGF’s new Director of Media and Strategic Communications, Yunusa Tanko Abdullahi, said the appointments align with recommendations from Deloitte, which was engaged to help reengineer the forum’s structure and enhance its capacity as a subnational policy hub.

“The engagement of Deloitte was aimed at restructuring the secretariat and strengthening its processes in line with our core mandate,” Abdullahi said. “These appointments cut across critical areas such as human capital development, economic policy, security, and communication.”

He added that the newly appointed executives will work alongside other key officers, including Chuku Chijioke Chuku, General Counsel and Head of Energy; Mrs Hauwa Haliru-Hassan, Director of Gender Affairs and CEO of the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum; and Dr Ibrahim Ahmad Katsina, Senior Security Adviser.

According to Abdullahi, the restructuring reflects NGF’s determination to build a “high-performing, multidisciplinary leadership team capable of addressing Nigeria’s complex governance challenges — from economic transformation and security to human capital development and effective public communication.”
