Katsina State has declared Monday, July 14, a public holiday to honour the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in a London hospital on Sunday at the age of 82.

Announcing the decision, Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Garba Faskari, said the work-free day would allow citizens of the state to join the rest of the country in mourning the loss of one of Nigeria’s most influential and enduring political figures.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda paid glowing tribute to Buhari, describing him as “a great leader, a hero, a true democrat and a patriotic elder statesman.” He extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina, and the Nigerian nation, praying that Almighty Allah grants the former president eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.

Tinubu: A statesman of integrity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Buhari’s death as a national tragedy, noting that the late president embodied the ideals of discipline, integrity, and national service.

“President Buhari was to the very core a patriot, a soldier, a statesman,” Tinubu said. “Duty, honour, and a deep commitment to the unity and progress of our nation defined his life.”

In a statement released Sunday evening, Tinubu said Buhari would be accorded full state honours. He directed that national flags fly at half-mast for seven days and summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council meeting for Tuesday to honour the deceased.

Jonathan: Buhari was admired for decency and selfless service

Former President Goodluck Jonathan described Buhari as “a disciplined officer and committed public servant” whose legacy would be remembered by all Nigerians.

“He was deeply admired across the strata of society for his decency, integrity and exemplary life of service,” Jonathan said. “In his passing, Nigeria has lost one of its foremost leaders, and I have lost a respected colleague and elder.”

Atiku: Nigeria loses a resilient leader

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s death, calling him “a symbol of Nigeria’s resilience” and “a soldier of principle.”

“His death is a profound national tragedy,” Atiku said. “Nigeria has lost a statesman who bore the burdens of leadership in both turbulent and triumphant times.”

Osinbajo: Buhari’s legacy of public service will endure

In his tribute, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo reflected on their eight years in office together and said Buhari’s life was marked by unyielding devotion to Nigeria.

“Nigeria has lost a true patriot,” Osinbajo said. “His legacy will endure as a testament to the nobility of public service, defined by honesty, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the public good.”

Osinbajo and his wife, Dolapo, revealed they had spoken with Buhari’s widow, Aisha, and son, Yusuf, to share in their grief.

Obi: A solemn moment for the nation

Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi also mourned the late president, describing the moment as one of national reflection.

“President Buhari always comported himself with dignity,” Obi wrote on social media. “May Almighty Allah… forgive his shortcomings, reward his efforts in service to the nation, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.”

Kwankwaso: Shock and prayers

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a political rival turned admirer, said he received the news of Buhari’s death “with profound shock” and offered prayers for his eternal rest.

A legacy of service

Buhari, a retired Major General, first led Nigeria as military Head of State between 1983 and 1985 before returning to power as a democratically elected president in 2015. He served two terms until 2023.

His years in power were marked by a fierce anti-corruption drive, efforts to modernise agriculture and infrastructure, and a firm stance on security, though his administration also faced criticism over economic hardship and human rights concerns.

As Nigerians mourn his passing, preparations are underway for his burial. The federal and Katsina State governments are expected to announce further details in the coming hours.
