Six governors of the All Progressives Congress on Monday held a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, but left without speaking to the press.
The governors, who arrived at about 4:00pm, proceeded straight into the President’s office for a session that lasted less than an hour. After the meeting ended, they walked past State House correspondents without offering any remarks, declining all requests for comment.
The New Diplomat has yet to confirm the purpose of the meeting.
Those present were Jigawa governor Umar Namadi; Edo governor Monday Okpebholo; Ekiti governor Biodun Oyebanji; Kogi governor Usman Ododo; Sokoto governor Aliyu Sokoto; and Kebbi governor Nasir Idris.
The engagement comes at a time of renewed security strain across the country, including recent abductions of schoolchildren and worshippers in the North-West and North-Central. Many of the states represented — particularly Kebbi, Sokoto and Kogi — have experienced sustained bandit attacks and kidnap-for-ransom incidents, heightening the need for stronger cooperation with federal security agencies.
President Tinubu recently declared a national security emergency, directing military and police authorities to accelerate recruitment, bolster deployments and prioritise the protection of vulnerable public spaces such as schools, farms and places of worship. He also urged governors to strengthen local intelligence and early-warning structures.
Monday’s meeting also follows the appointment of a new Defence Minister and ongoing diplomatic engagements aimed at boosting counter-terrorism assistance.
Despite the growing security concerns and speculation about the meeting’s focus, the APC governors maintained silence as they exited the Villa.
