Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has cautioned Nigerians against vote-buying and selling, warning that the practice mortgages the country’s future.
In a post on his X handle on Tuesday, Obi described vote-buying as “an investment in corruption,” stressing that politicians who pay for votes only seek to recover their money through looting public funds.
“Those who buy votes do so with one intention — to loot tomorrow. If your vote had no value, nobody would be desperate to buy it,” Obi said.
He urged Nigerians to resist inducements at the polls, insisting that trading ballots for money or food items deprives citizens of quality schools, hospitals, and jobs.
“The choice is ours. We either sell our votes and remain trapped in poverty, or reject inducements and reclaim our future,” he added.
