Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday hosted the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Abuja, fuelling speculation over possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi confirmed the meeting in a post on his official X handle, describing Jonathan as an “elder brother, statesman, and leader,” and noting that their discussions centred on national issues and the state of the country.
“Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan @GEJonathan. We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation,” Obi wrote.
Although details of the parley were not made public, political observers believe talks may have extended to the 2027 elections, with both men repeatedly linked to possible presidential runs under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Jonathan, who governed Nigeria between 2010 and 2015, has in recent months increased his consultations with opposition figures, while Obi, despite flying the Labour Party flag in 2023, has been the subject of persistent speculation about a return to the PDP ahead of 2027.
The meeting comes amid widening discussions within the opposition about building a united front to challenge President Bola Tinubu at the next polls.
