The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has condemned the abduction of worshippers in Enugu State, warning that Nigeria's worsening insecurity has evolved into a national emergency that requires urgent and collective action.
Reacting to the incident in a statement posted on his official X handle on Monday, the former Anambra State governor said the kidnapping of citizens during a religious gathering underscored the growing threat posed by criminal elements across the country.
Obi described the attack as deeply disturbing, noting that the victims had gathered for worship in search of spiritual comfort when they were abducted.
"I have been deeply dismayed by the recent news concerning the abduction of worshippers in Enugu. It is profoundly distressing that fellow Nigerians, who had come together in divine worship seeking solace and hope, have endured such a traumatic and criminal ordeal," he said.
The former governor argued that insecurity was no longer confined to states traditionally affected by insurgency and banditry, but had spread across the country.
"It is increasingly clear that this is no longer an isolated incident affecting specific states like Borno, Benue, Plateau, Zamfara or Katsina. It has escalated into a national crisis, threatening every Nigerian, regardless of their ethnic background, religious beliefs or regional origins," Obi said.
He stressed that Nigerians should be able to practise their faith, pursue education, work and live in their homes without fear of violence or abduction.
"No part of our country should be a place where citizens live in constant fear of attending religious services, pursuing education, engaging in work, or even resting in their own homes," he added.
Obi urged Nigerians to rise above political, ethnic and religious divisions in tackling the country's security challenges, insisting that the protection of lives should be treated as a shared national responsibility.
"This is a critical moment for Nigeria to come together as one nation. Security concerns must go beyond partisan politics, tribal loyalties or religious differences," he said.
He also called on security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted worshippers and bring the perpetrators to justice.
"We cannot accept these tragedies as a new normal. Every Nigerian life is invaluable, and every possible measure must be taken to protect it," Obi stated.
Expressing hope for the country's future, the NDC presidential candidate said Nigeria could overcome its security challenges through collective resolve and effective leadership, adding that "a new Nigeria is possible with God on our side."
