2027: Lagos, Kano, Kaduna top states with highest registered voters

Lagos, Kano and Kaduna have emerged as the three states with the highest number of registered voters ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to figures released by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, disclosed the figures on Tuesday while speaking in Abuja, putting the national register at more than 103 million voters.

However, in presenting the state-by-state breakdown, Amupitan said the national register stood at 110 million.

According to him, Lagos leads the country with 7,488,633 registered voters, followed by Kano with 6,570,276 and Kaduna with 4,662,640.

Katsina occupies the fourth position with 3,876,051 registered voters, while Rivers is fifth with 3,736,434.

Oyo has 3,588,111 registered voters, followed by Delta with 3,525,988.

Benue ranks eighth with 3,057,225 voters, while Ogun has 3,037,981. Bauchi completes the top 10 with 3,012,547 registered voters.

Amupitan said the figures covered the three phases of the commission’s voter registration exercise.

“The national register of voters now stands at 110 million, making Nigeria the largest democracy in Africa,” the INEC chairman said.

He also provided a breakdown of the register according to states, gender and age.

The Federal Capital Territory has 1,732,043 registered voters, making it one of the areas with the lowest number of registered voters.

Ekiti has the lowest figure among the states, with 1,055,708 registered voters, followed by Bayelsa with 1,200,691.

Yobe has 1,733,641 registered voters, while Gombe has 1,768,566.

The gender distribution shows that male voters constitute the larger portion of the register, with 53,528,218 representing 51.75 per cent.

Female voters account for 49,900,497 of the registered voters.

The age distribution indicates that voters aged between 35 and 49 years form the largest group, with 43,265,946 voters, representing 41.83 per cent of the register.

They are followed by voters aged between 18 and 34 years, numbering 29,777,576 or 28.79 per cent.

Voters between 50 and 69 years account for 22,982,900, representing 22.22 per cent of the register.

Those aged 70 years and above constitute the smallest age category, with 7,402,291 registered voters, representing 7.16 per cent.

The INEC chairman also disclosed that 232,658 persons with disabilities are captured in the register.

According to him, the persons with disabilities are spread across 10 disability categories and account for approximately 0.2 per cent of the total register.

The latest figures come as INEC intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections, with voter registration data expected to be central to the commission’s planning and electoral logistics.
