The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on the first count of the terrorism charges filed against him by the Federal Government.
Justice James Omotosho, delivering judgment on Thursday, held that prosecutors proved beyond reasonable doubt that Kanu issued multiple incendiary broadcasts encouraging attacks, violence, and killings in pursuit of his separatist campaign.
The court said the evidence presented by the Federal Government was “uncontroverted and compelling,” stressing that Kanu failed to challenge or contradict any of the broadcasts attributed to him.
According to the judge, the content of the broadcasts clearly endangered public safety and constituted a deliberate attempt to incite widespread unrest across the South-East.
With the court affirming guilt on count one, attention now shifts to the remaining charges and the sentencing phase expected to follow.
