The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed speculation that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, might return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that such a move would be politically unwise.
ADC spokesman and former PDP chieftain, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the statement on Monday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time. He noted that Obi remains a key member of the coalition of opposition parties being coordinated by the ADC in preparation for the 2027 elections.
“Let me say clearly, Peter Obi is in the coalition,” Abdullahi declared.
“Regardless of what anybody is saying. But it is good to see that it has taken the coming on board of the ADC to get the PDP to begin to make some movements. Everyone knows that the jugular of the PDP is in the hands of the ruling party. Peter Obi, more than anyone else, knows he cannot take the risk of going back to the PDP.”
‘A symbol of hope’
His comments come amid renewed praise for Obi from Professor Jerry Gana, a founding PDP member and former Minister of Information.
In a recent interview on Africa Independent Television (AIT), Gana described Obi as “a symbol of hope” and one of the few leaders capable of rebuilding Nigeria.
“Peter Obi is one of the finest leaders in this country,” Gana said.
“He is disciplined, prudent, and deeply committed to the Nigerian project. He is a key voice for the future of democracy in this country, and we need people like him at the forefront of a united opposition.”
Opposition unity for 2027
Gana also emphasised that a coalition of credible opposition figures will be crucial for unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. He warned that no single party, including the PDP or Labour Party, can succeed alone against the APC without strategic collaboration.
