The Nigerian Army has launched an internal investigation into the leak of a classified intelligence report issued by the Department of State Services (DSS) warning of planned attacks by suspected Boko Haram insurgents and bandits in parts of Adamawa and Borno states.
Military sources said the probe is being conducted by senior officers at the 232 Battalion in Yola, Adamawa State, following the circulation of the confidential document on social media.
According to the sources, the intelligence report had already been received and formally registered by the battalion before it was allegedly photographed and leaked to unauthorised persons.
A security source familiar with the matter said preliminary findings indicated that the document was leaked from within the military formation.
"The document had already been entered into the registry of the 232 Battalion before someone took a photograph of it and circulated it for reasons best known to that individual," the source said.
The source expressed concern that the disclosure of the classified report had created unnecessary anxiety among residents of the affected communities.
"The DSS sent the intelligence to alert the military so that proactive security measures could be taken. Unfortunately, the leak has now caused panic among the public," the source added.
Another military officer confirmed that the Army had commenced efforts to identify those responsible for the leak, describing the incident as a serious breach of security.
"We are determined to identify those behind the leak. National security cannot be compromised by the actions of a few individuals. Those responsible will be held accountable," the officer said.
The leaked intelligence report, dated July 27, 2026, was addressed to the Commander of the 23 Armoured Brigade in Yola.
According to the document, the DSS warned that suspected Boko Haram insurgents were planning coordinated attacks on communities in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State and Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State following the reported collapse of a ceasefire arrangement.
The report indicated that the insurgents were allegedly plotting to abduct senior government officials, councillors, district heads, religious leaders and other residents in the affected areas.
It also identified the District Head of Michika and his son among those allegedly marked for abduction.
The intelligence further revealed that suspected insurgents had deployed surveillance teams to monitor movements and gather information in preparation for the planned attacks.
As part of its recommendations, the DSS advised the Nigerian Army to intensify collaboration with forest guards, local hunters and other security stakeholders to strengthen surveillance and prevent the planned attacks in the vulnerable communities.
The Army has yet to issue an official statement on the investigation, but security sources said efforts were ongoing to contain the threat and ensure those responsible for leaking the classified intelligence are brought to justice.
